今回、VoYJこの日なんの日特別企画「世界難民ウィーク」にむけて、マズーンさんにインタビューさせていただくことができました！

VoYJではその様子を前編後編の２回に分けてお伝えしていきます。

3. Current and future vision

現在大学生と伺いましたが、大学では何を勉強していますか？

・What do you study at university?

国際政治学を勉強しています。

I study International Politics.

・今の目標は何ですか？

・What is your goal now? 

私の目標は、勉強を終え、子どもたちと人権のために声をあげ、努力し続けることです。また、課題を浮き彫りにするだけでなく、現実の上での生活をより良いものにしていく力があればいいなと思っているので、どんどん助けられたらいいなと思っています。

My goal is to finish my studies and to continue to fight for children and human rights. I also wish that I can help them more and more, as I hope to have the power to improve their lives on reality not only to highlight their challenges but also to help them by all possible means.

・今後のビジョンや夢を教えてください。

・Please tell us your vision and dream from now on for future.

例えば、予想もしなかったことが起きて、それまで計画していた何かが大きく変わってしまうことがあります。未来にはそのような特徴や課題があるので、今置かれている状況で未来を決めることは難しいでしょう。しかし、将来のことをあまり気にせずに、今のうちに努力して、自分自身を向上させるためのあらゆる機会を利用し、常に前向きに、自分が世の中に何かを提供できると信じて、常にやるべきことを持っていることが大切だと思います。個人的には、現在の自分と他人のためにできる限りのことをしている一方で、将来の自分に起こるどんなことに対しても準備をしています。

In my point of view, I think I am hard to make a judgment on our future from the current situation/condition that we live in, as the future itself has its own characteristics and challenges, for instance, we might plan something but something that we have not expected happens, then changes our plans profoundly. However, it is important to work hard in our present and use all possible opportunities to improve ourselves as well as to stay positive and have faith that we always can offer something to the world and we always have something to do without worrying so much about the future. Personally, I do as much as I can to help myself and others in my present, but also I am ready and prepared for whatever will happen to me in the future.

４. ユースへのメッセージ

4. Messages

・極めて困難な状況にある人をエンパワーメントする上で、若者であることの強みは何だと思いますか？

・What do you think are the strengths of the youth in empowering people in an extremely difficult situation?

若者は、自分たちが直面している問題を解決するために意味のあるアイデアを持っていて、自分たちにどんな課題が起きても、解決策のに携わることができるので、最も困難な状況の中で変化を起こし、リードしていく力を持っていると思います。若者は様々な目的のために様々な国でキャンペーンを行っており、彼らは自分たちが直面している問題を理解しています。したがって、彼らは、何のために声を上げ、立ち向かうのかを知っており、それは彼らが社会に力を与え、彼らをより強くすることができることを意味しています。

I think youth are so powerful to make and lead a change in the most difficult situations, as they have meaningful ideas to solve the problems that are facing them and as long as they are affected of any challenge happens to them, they can be part of the solutions. Youth are leading campaigns in different countries for different purposes and they are understanding the problems that are facing them. Thus, they know their issues and they know what they fight for, which means they can empower their societies and make them stronger.

・日本の若者へのメッセージをお願いします。

・Can you give some messages to the youth in Japan?

世界中で何百万人もの人が基礎教育すら受けられない時代に、質の高い教育を受けることができるというメリットを享受してほしい。感謝しなければならないことがたくさんあるので、一生懸命勉強して、前向きに考え、そして決してあきらめないでいてほしいと思います。あなたたちが基本的な権利であり、普通の生活だと思っていることは、世界の多くの人にとって夢のようなことです。そして、自分のことだけを知るのではなく、他の人が何に直面しているのかを知ることが大切なので、世界で何が起こっているのか勉強してほしいと思います。そうすれば、私たちは、誰にとっても重要な地球規模の問題を解決するために、団結して行動することができるからです。

I want them to enjoy the benefit of having access to quality education at the time there are millions like them around the world do not have access even to basic education. I want them to study hard and stay positive and never give up, as there are many things they have to be grateful for! As what we think it is a fundamental right and a normal life, they are dreams to many people in the world. I also would love them to educate themselves about what is going in the world, as it is important that we all learn about what other people are facing rather than knowing about ourselves only, as in this way we can work collectively and have with togetherness to solve the global problems that matter to all of us.

・難民の方へのメッセージをお願いします。

・Can you give some messages to refugees?

私はすべての難民に前向きに考え、決してあきらめないでもらいたい。私はすべての難民に、手に入れるべきものを手に入れられるようになってほしいと思っています。私はまた、自分たちの国を再建するためだけでなく、自分自身を再建するためにも、難民が夢を持ち、学び、自分自身を高める意欲を決して失わないことを願っています。人生はとても暗いように見えるかもしれませんが、その先には必ず光があり、私たちが勝ち取る価値のあるものが必ずあるのです。

I want from every refugee to stay positive and never give up, I want every refugee to know no matter what, they can get what they deserve. I also wish that refugees never lose the desire to dream and to learn, as their faith in education and the faith to improve themselves are the keys for rebuilding their countries as well as for building themselves. The life might seem so dark, but there is always a light ahead and there is always something worth from us to fight for.

前編となる今回は、マズーンさんの難民の経験、UNICEF親善大使としての活動について伺いました。

１. 難民の経験について

1. Experiences as a refugee

・難民の経験について教えてください。

・Please tell us about your experience as a refugee.

私の難民としての経験は、母国のシリアで紛争が発生し、家族でシリアを離れてヨルダンに住むことにした2013年にさかのぼります。シリアを出た後は難民キャンプで生活することになり、まずザアタリ難民キャンプで１年半生活し、次にヨルダンのアズラクキャンプという別のキャンプに住み、ここでも１年半近く過ごしました。つまり、３年間難民キャンプで生活したことになります。

私は教育にとても情熱を持っていて、「知識がなければ人生の目標を達成することはできない」と信じていたので、難民キャンプでの難しい状況の中でも私は声を上げはじめました。同時に、私は祖国であるシリアを脱出したときに、勉強が続けられなくなり、祖国の再建に協力することができなくなるかもしれないと恐れていたので、キャンプ内にも学校があって勉強を続けられたことにとても感謝しています。

私はまた、すべての人が女子も男子も関係なく教育を受けることが重要であり、私たちのコミュニティは一人だけが教育を受けることではなく、集団全体が教育を受けることを必要としていて、これによってコミュニティの力をより強くすることができると信じています。

そこで、シリアでの未曾有の困難により、多くの子どもたちが希望を失い、学校に行く意欲を失っているのを目の当たりにしたとき、私は、難民であることが私たちの夢を追いかけ、権利を得ることを止めてはならないと思い、彼らを励まし、希望を与えようとしました。  

My story as a refugee has started when I fled my homeland in Syria in 2013 because of the conflict in my country, so my family decided to leave and go to live in Jordan. Thus, after leaving Syria we had to live in refugee camps, first, we lived in Zata’ari refugee camp for 1 year and a half, then we lived in another camp in Jordan called Azraq camp, we nearly spent 1 year and a half too in Azraq. This means we lived 3 years in refugee camps. 

In the camps, it was the beginning of my activism work, from the difficult circumstances I decided to use my voice to fight for education because I am so passionate about education and I believe we cannot achieve our goals in our lives without having knowledge as well as I was so afraid when I fled my homeland in Syria that I cannot and we cannot help in rebuilding our homeland without continuing my studies, that’s why I was so grateful to find a school in the camp to learn! I also believe that it is important that everyone must get education girls and boys and our communities do not require one individual to be educated but instead it requires collective efforts to make our communities stronger and stronger, hence, when I witnessed that many children have lost of hope and lost the desire to go to school due to the unprecedented challenges they faced in Syria, I tried to encourage them and give them hope, as being refugees mustn’t stop us from following our dreams and getting our rights.  

・故郷で一番好きなことは何ですか？

・What do you love most about your hometown?

実際、私は祖国のすべてを愛しています。シリアを脱出した後、「たとえシリアに住まなくても、シリアは永遠に私の中に生きている」と実感しました。

In fact, I love everything about my homeland, as after fleeing Syria I realized that ‘even if I don’t live in Syria, but Syria lives in me forever.’

・どのような経験を経て、教育が自分の将来の鍵を握っていることを実感しましたか？

・Through what experience did you realize that education is the key to your future?

そうですね、私は自分の経験を通して、教育が私たちに良い影響を与えることを実感しました。たとえ人生においてどんな状況においても私たちに力を与えてくれることからです。知識さえあれば、何があっても人を助けることができるし、自分自身を助けることもできるということを学びました。

Yes, through my experience I realized the positive impact that education can make on us, as it makes us strong in all stages of live even if that stage is easy or difficult. I have learnt that no matter what as long as we have our knowledge we always can help other people and can help ourselves. 

・難民キャンプではどのようにして学習のモチベーションを維持していましたか？

・How did you keep motivation for learning in a refugee camp?

私がモチベーションを保ち続けたのは、「私たちの権利がなくなったのは私が悪いのではないし、難民になったのも私のせいではない。だから私は学ぶに値するし、権利を得るに値する」と強く信じているからです。苦しくても、難民になっても、被害者であることを受け入れず、私には、夢に向かう力があるし、なりたい自分になれる力があると思うことにしています。

I kept my motivation alive because I strongly believe it is not my fault to lose our rights and it wasn’t my fault to become a refugee, so I deserve to learn and I deserve to get my rights. As, I don’t accept to be a victim even if I have suffered and that we have become refugees, I still have the power to to reach my dreams and I still have the power to be who I want to be.

２. UNICEF親善大使としての活動 

2. Activities as UNICEF goodwill ambassador 

UNICEF親善大使としてどのような活動をされているのか教えてください。

・Can you tell us about what you are doing as UNICEF goodwill ambassador?

UNICEFの親善大使として、私は世界中を旅して、世界に知られていない困難な状況下にいる子どもたちを代表して発言し、子どもたちの課題を強調するために私の声を使っています。私は、世界の指導者や意思決定者に、助けを必要としている子どもたちを支援して状況を改善し、特に教育を受ける権利が与えられるように働きかけています。そのような子どもたちを助けることは、私たちの責任であり、教育は特権ではありません。私はまた、子どもたちにとって最悪の状況にある国を訪問し、現場の現実を見てきました。そして、影響を受けている人々が直面している問題を浮き彫りにするために、私が目撃した様子をどこに行っても伝えています。例えば、最近アフリカのマリに行ったときには、非常に困難な状況にある多くの子どもたちを訪問しましたが、そのときには、メディアや著名な人たちとの会議やミーティングで、それらの話や問題点を世界に向けて伝えました。また、UNICEFとの ‘Education Cannot Wait’ キャンペーンなど、多くのキャンペーンにも参加しています。さらに、緊急時の子どもたちへの教育支援など、ソーシャルメディアを使って問題意識を広めています。

As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, I travel the world to speak on behalf of children whose their stories need to be heard, I use my voice to highlight their challenges. I try to push world leaders and decision makers to help and improve the lives of children who are in need, especially to get their right to education, as helping those children is our responsibility not a privilege that we provide those children with. I also go and visit countries that have the worst situations for children to see the real situation on the ground and I then tell those stories that I have witnessed to wherever I go in order to highlight the issues are facing by those people who are affected, which means they can gain more support. Like for example I was recently in Mali in Africa where I have visited so many children who were in a very difficult situations, so then I told all those stories and all those problems to the world whether by media or by mentioning that in the conferences or meetings that I have with high profile people. I also participate with so many campaigns with UNICEF such as ‘Education Cannot Wait’ Campaign and many more. Furthermore, I spread awareness through my social media accounts to support education for children in emergencies and so on. 

・教育の大切さを難民の子どもたちや保護者に伝えるときに、一番難しかったり、やりがいを感じたりすることは何ですか？

・What are the most challenging and worthwhile when you tell refugee children and parents about the importance of education?

教育について説得しようとしたときの反応は人それぞれですが、否定的な返事をしてくる人の多くは、教育の重要性を伝えるのは私の仕事ではないと言ってきたり、シリアに戻ったらまた学ぶと言ってきたりしますが、そのような否定的な反応は、かえって活動を続けるための強いモチベーションになりました。社会を変えるためのこの仕事を始めた時、私は多くの困難に直面することに気付きましたが、それらには絶対に負けません。

Every person is different, as everyone you try to convince him/her about education has a different response, but most often the people who reply negatively they tell me that it is not my business to tell them about the importance of education or they say when we go back to Syria will learn again, but that negativity gave me a stronger motivation to continue as when I started my activism work, I realized I will face many challenges but I will never let those challenges to overcome me.

・女の子が自由に勉強できる環境を作るためには、どのようなことが鍵となりますか。

・What is the key to make the environment where girls can study freely?

女の子が自由に安心して学べる環境を整えるためのルールや法律を課すことができる、そんな政府があることが鍵となります。

The key is to have governments that can impose rules and legislations, which can provide a free and safe environment for girls to learn. 

いかがでしたでしょうか。

私は、マズーンさんの「たとえシリアに住まなくても、シリアは永遠に私の中に生きている」という言葉の重みをとても実感しました。

世界難民の日を機会に、より多くの人に関心を持っていただけたら嬉しいです。

[2. What we felt through the talks]
What we felt from the talks with Ms. Muzoon Almellehan is her strong, settled beliefs that education can change the lives of children. Her words and strong looks expressed her love and hope towards education. She told us strongly that education is the base of everything, and that we can give out hope to children with the opportunity of education.

Since we have no experience of being in a refugee camp, we can only imagine how Ms. Muzoon had felt in her days there, but from her strong passion in education flowing from her words, we were able to see how education had supported her in the harshest environment, and how many children were saved from her brave actions.

She concluded with a message to all the youths in Japan. “The more you like, the more you should take action” She says that she was able to continue because she had loved to learn. She gave us courage, saying that we can change the world, little by little, by taking action in what we love.

Comments from the members of Voice of Youth JAPAN

I realized on how much I should be thankful for the environment to be able to study as much as I want. Furthermore, being the same youth as Muzoon, she felt very close to talk to. I felt that I should brave enough to start thinking what I can do and start taking it into action.

First, it was my honor to have a chance to talk to the Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF, Ms. Muzoon Almellehan. I thought that she was very cool, to clearly have what she believes in, despite being as old as I am. I was heartbroken by her words, especially when she said that she will never forget about Syria wherever she is, since there are many Syrian people behind me and that she wants to contribute to Syria again in the future. It was also my honor that she had favorably taken Voice of Youth JAPAN when I introduced it to her. I know this may be impertinent of myself, but I will be happy to do something together with her, and I will continue to be in support of her beliefs.

Having a talk with Muzoon, who is in the same generation as myself, I was able to hear the real stories about how serious the reality is in Syria, and how much she came over the hardships when she was telling the importance of education. I had been following the Syrian Crisis for a long time, but it was my first time feeling close with this conflict. I believe that education and urban environment, which is my current major, is closely related as urban environments can be improved with proper education. I would like to continue being in part of Voice of Youth JAPAN and other projects, with the passion I received from her words.

[3. Conclusion]
During the talks, we were able to hear her stories as a university student, about how she likes to study with her friends and go to libraries, despite being a goodwill ambassador. In the end, she was very kind to give us some encouragements for Voice of Youth JAPAN. We hope that we can continue the relationship with her, and someday, we can see each other to cooperate in each other’s actions.

【2. マズーンさんとの対談を通して】
マズーンさんとの対談を通じて、何よりも感じたのは、教育こそが子どもの人生を変えることのできるという揺るぎない信念でした。マズーンさんの力強い目や発せられる言葉の一つ一つから、教育への愛情と希望を感じました。「教育はすべての基盤になる。教育の機会があれば、子供たちに将来の希望を与えることができる。」マズーンさんは力強く語っていました。

故郷での内戦と難民キャンプでの生活を経験したマズーンさんの心情は想像することしかできません。しかし、彼女の言葉から溢れる教育への情熱から、辛い時に教育がどれだけ彼女の心の支えになってきたのか、そして彼女の活動によりどれほど多くの子供たちが救われてきたのかということを感じとることができました。

マズーンさんは日本の若者へのメッセージとして「好きなものほど行動を起こそう！」と述べていました。マズーンさんは学ぶことが好きであったからこそ、これまでの活動を続けることができたと言います。私たち若者が、何か自分の好きなことでアクションを起こすことで、少しずつ世界を変えていくことができるのではないかと、私たちに勇気を与えてくださいました。

一緒に対談に参加した学生たちから、それぞれの感想を述べてもらいました。

● 今まで自分が好きなだけ勉強できるという環境にいられたことの、ありがたさを改めて感じました。そして、同年代ということもあり、マズーンさんがとても身近に感じ、私も現状に甘んじずに、自分が今できることは何か考え行動にうつしていく勇気を持たないと、と思いました。
● まずは今回、ユニセフ親善大使のマズーンさんとお話する機会を与えていただけたことを大変嬉しく思います。マズーンさんは同年代であるのに芯がしっかり通っていらっしゃってカッコいいと思いました。特に、私はどこにいてもシリアのことは忘れないし、私の後ろにはたくさんのシリアの人がいる。将来はシリアに何かできたら、という言葉に大変心を打たれました。VoYJをご紹介した際には、すごく好意的に受け止めてくださったことも大変光栄でした。おこがましいですが、いつかマズーンさんと一緒に何かできたら幸せと思いますし、これからもマズーンさんを応援したいと思っています。
● 今回同年代でもあるマズーンさんと直接お話しして、どれだけシリアの現状が深刻であるか、そして教育の重要性を伝えるに当たってどれだけのチャレンジを乗り越えてきたのかの生の声を聞くことができました。シリアでの問題は永らく自分も興味があり追ってきたものでありましたが、初めて、シリア問題が身近に感じました。教育と自分の専攻である都市環境は関係性が深く、正しい教育によって将来の都市の環境も良い方向へ変えていけるかと思っています。マズーンさんの言葉から受けた刺激を活かして、VoYJやEMPOWERも含めて、これからもっと積極的に頑張って行きたいと思います。

【3. おわりに】
親善大使として世界で活躍するマズーンさん。しかし同時に、私たちと同じ大学生でもあります。大学では友達と一緒に勉強することが好きであることや、図書館によく行くことなど同年代ならではの話も聞くことができました。

非常に気さくで明るい方であり、最後にはVoYJの活動を頑張ってほしいとのお言葉もいただきました。今回の対談で終わることなく、いつか再びお会いし、共に活動できることを願っています。
