みなさん、シリア出身の競泳選手、ユスラ・マルディニさんをご存知ですか？

2015年の、あの感動的なニュースとともにその名前を記憶している方もいらっしゃるでしょう。

2015年夏、紛争を逃れてギリシャへ向かう人々を乗せた小型ボートが、故障し、沈没しかけました。そのとき姉たちとともに海に飛び込み、三時間半ボートを押して泳ぎ続け、20名の命を救った17歳の競泳選手がいました。シリア出身の競泳選手、ユスラ・マルディニさんです。

ユスラさんは競泳選手として、史上初の難民選手団の一員としてリオ五輪に出場し、次回の東京オリンピックに向けてトレーニングされています。また、2017年4月からは最年少のUNHCR親善大使に任命され、現在も世界の難民を助けるために活動されています。

今回はYouth×UNHCR for Refugeesプロジェクトの一環として、「VoYJこの日なんの日特別企画　世界難民ウィーク」にむけ、ユスラさんにインタビューさせていただくことができました！

VoYJではその様子を前編後編の２回に分けてお伝えしていきます。

後編となる今回は、UNHCR親善大使としての活動についてや、現在のCOVID-19影響下でのご生活、今後のビジョンなどを伺い、最後に若者へのメッセージを頂きました。

UNHCR親善大使としてのご活動

★  難民の若者を勇気づける活動について、もっと教えてください。

          Can you tell us about your current activities to empower young refugees?

私はインスタグラムを使って、難民やUNHCRの活動についての情報を共有し、他の人たちに知ってもらおうとしています。私は今、自分の声で他の人を助けることができ、UNHCRの親善大使になる機会を得られたことにとても感謝しています。UNHCRは私と同じような人々を助けるために常に活動しています。そんな活動の中でシチリアで出会った難民の話は私を奮い立たせてくれますし、一人で地中海横断をした12歳の女の子にも会いました。一口に難民と言っても、物語や経験は全く別のものです。私は7000万の物語のうちの一つに過ぎません。

たまたま難民になったからといって、みんな同じではないということを知ってもらいたい。私は、UNHCRと一緒に旅を続け、問題意識を広めていきたいと思っています。そして、若い難民の方々が私のことや私の物語を知り、希望を見出してくれたら嬉しいです。

I use my Instagram to try and share information about refugees and the work of UNHCR to educate others. I am so grateful that I can now use my voice to help others and for having the opportunity to be a goodwill ambassador for UNHCR. They are constantly working to help people just like me. I have met some amazing people through working with UNHCR, the stories of the refugees I met in Sicily inspire me, I met one 12-year-old girl who made the Mediterranean crossing alone. Although we are both refugees, our stories and experiences are so different. I am just one of 70 million stories.

I want people to know just because we happen to be refugees, we are not all the same. I would love to continue to travel with UNHCR and spread awareness, I hope other young refugees can look at me and my story and it can give them hope.

        Please tell us your vision and dream for the future.

水泳を続け、願わくば東京オリンピックに出場すること、そして自分の立場を生かして難民の苦境について人々の意識を広め、伝えることを目指しています。私は、難民であるというのがどういうことなのかについての世界の人々の捉え方を変えたいと思っています。

To keep on swimming, to hopefully make it to the Olympics in Tokyo and to use my platform to spread awareness and educate people about the plight of refugees. I want to alter global perceptions of what it means to be a refugee.

COVID-19下で

★ COVID-19のパンデミックの状況下で、ご自身のモチベーションを保ち、家での時間を有効活用するために、どんな工夫をされていますか？

      How do you keep your motivation up and make the most of staying at home due to the COVID-19 pandemic?

東京に着いたらできる限りのことをしようという決意をしているので、モチベーションが上がります。

少しやる気が出ないと感じた時は、今まで頑張ってきたことを思い出して、集中力を維持するように自分を奮い立たせています。

休み時間を有効に使って、家族との時間を大切にしています。

乗り越えてきたことを考えると、自分が今の状況にあることがどれほどありがたいことか気づかされます。

I am determined to do the best I possibly can when we get to Tokyo, that keeps me motivated.

If I feel a little unmotivated, I think about all the hard work I have done already and that encourages me to stay focused.

I am making the most of having some downtime and spending time with my family.

I think about what I’ve overcome and that reminds me of how lucky I am to be in the position I’m in. 

ユスラさんからのメッセージ

★ コロナの影響を受けているユースアスリートにメッセージをお願いします。

     Nowadays, a lot of youth athletes have many difficulties to play sports due to COVID-19. Can you give some messages to encourage such athletes?

自分が何を達成したいのか、何を目標にしているのかに集中し続ける必要があります。ロックダウンは様々なアスリートに様々な形で困難を与えていますが、自分の目標を心に留めて、家にいてもできる範囲で運動を続けてみてください。体を動かし続けることは、フィジカル面だけでなく、メンタル面でも大切なことです。

You have to remain focussed on what you want to achieve and what your goal is. Lockdown has been difficult for different athletes in different ways but try and keep your goal in mind and continue to exercise however you can, even just at home. It is important for your physical but also your mental health to keep your body working.

★  最後に日本のユースにメッセージをお願いします。

        Finally, can you give us a message for the whole youth in Japan?

たとえ何か悪いことが起きても、そのことによってあなたという人間までもが決まってしまうことはありません。起こったことを受け止め、そこから学べば、あなたはすばらしいことを成し遂げることができるでしょう。

When something bad happens to you, you don’t have to let it define you, take what has happened and learn from it and you will be able to achieve great things.

私は、ユスラさんの「悪いことが起こったとしても、それがあなたを決める訳ではない」というメッセージが心に残りました。たまたま難民になってしまったユスラさんの、難民に対する認識を変えようと活動されている姿に胸を打たれます。いただいた言葉ひとつひとつを大切に、これからを過ごしていきたいと思います。

今回はYouth×UNHCR for Refugeesプロジェクトの一環として、「VoYJこの日なんの日特別企画　世界難民ウィーク」にむけ、ユスラさんにインタビューさせていただくことができました！
VoYJではその様子を前編後編の２回に分けてお伝えしていきます。

前編となる今回は、ユスラさんに難民としてのご経験や、2016年リオオリンピックに史上初の難民選手団のメンバーとして出場した時のことなどをお話ししていただきました。

ユース時代のユスラさん

★  ユース時代はどのような生活を送っていましたか？　生活はどのように違っていましたか？

     What was your childhood like? How different was life for you?

紛争が始まる前はシリアで普通の生活をしていました。良い生活でした。両親は良い仕事をしていて、母は理学療法士、父は水泳のコーチをしていました。ドイツで水泳を始めたと思われがちですが、紛争が始まる前は普通の生活をしていたのです。難民という言葉はとても重い言葉で、人々は私がドイツに来るまで何も持っていなかったと思っていますが、それは違います。

 幼い頃、父がコーチをしてくれていました。水泳は自ら選んだわけではないのですが、父が泳ぐように勧めてくれました。紛争が始まると、水泳は私にとってとても重要なものになりました。泳ぐことは、紛争地から逃げるための手段でした。

Before the war started I had a normal life in Syria. A good life. My parents had good jobs, my mum was a physiotherapist and my dad was a swimming coach. People presume I started swimming in Germany, but I had a normal life before the war. The word refugee is a very heavy word, people think I had nothing before I came here but that’s not true.

 When I was younger my dad was my coach, I didn’t really choose to swim but my dad encouraged me. When the war started, swimming became so important to me, it took me away from everything that was going on. Swimming was a potential avenue to get away from the war. 

難民としてのご経験

★  難民としてのご自身の経験をお聞かせください。

     Please tell us about your experience as a refugee. 

17歳の時、姉とシリアを脱出しました。自ら望んで逃げる人はいません。逃げるしかなかったのです。誰にも、選択の余地はありませんでした。

地中海横断がどれほど危険なものかは知っていましたが、シリアに残ることで日々直面する危機も理解していました。私たちは2015年、横断に成功した1,032,408人のうちの２人でした。

私たちはもう少しで地中海横断で命を落とすところでした。他の多くの船と同じように、私たちの乗っていた小型ボートは危険なほど過密状態で、エンジンが作動しなくなってしまいました。私たちには２つの選択肢がありました：あきらめて溺れてしまうか、何かをしようとするか――私たちが選んだのは後者でした。姉と私は水の中に飛び込んで、もうこれ以上は無理だと思うまでボートを押し続けました。３時間半泳いだ後、我々はギリシャに到着しました。他の多くの人はたどり着くことができなかったのに、なぜ私たちにはそれができたのか理解に苦しんでいます。海で溺れた人々の話を聞くたびに、私は船のロープにしがみついて必死に水を蹴っていたあの場所に立ち戻るのです。

 安全な国に到着したからといって、問題がすぐに解決するわけではないことに人々は気づいていません。他の多くの人々が追放されたまま、無国籍で何年も、時には何十年も難民キャンプで避難生活を強いられている中で、私はとても幸運にも再定住することができました。しかし、安全になった途端、すべてを失ったことに気づくのです。自分の家、自分の国籍、自分のアイデンティティ。私の周りには、目的や自己意識を失った多くの難民がいました。彼らはもはや医者でも教師でも弁護士でもエンジニアでもなく、ただ難民として一括りにされてしまったのです。

My sister and I fled Syria when I was 17. Nobody really decides to flee. We just had no choice. Nobody had a choice.

We knew how dangerous the Mediterranean crossing was but we also knew the risk we faced every single day that we stayed in Syria. In 2015 we were two of the 1,032,408 people who made the crossing.

We almost didn’t survive the Mediterranean crossing. Like so many of the boats used for the crossing, ours was dangerously overcrowded and the engine stopped working. We had two choices: either give up and drown or try and do something about it which is what we did. My sister and I jumped into the water and pushed until we could push no more. After swimming for three and a half hours we arrived in Greece. I struggle with the story, to understand why we made it when many others didn’t. Each time I hear about a group drowning at sea, it takes me back there, clinging to the boat’s rope, desperately treading water.

People don’t realise that the problems don’t instantly stop when you reach a safe country. I am so fortunate that I have been able to resettle when so many others remain displaced, stateless and stuck for many years, sometimes decades, in a refugee camp, but once you have reached safety you realise you have lost everything. Your home, your nationality, your identity.

I saw so many refugees around me that had lost their purpose and their sense of self. People were no longer doctors or teachers or lawyers or engineers, they were just labelled refugees.

難民選手団の一員として

★  史上初の難民選手団の一員として、リオ五輪に出場した時の気持ちを聞かせてください。

     How did you feel when you competed at Rio 2016 Summer Olympics as a member of the first-ever Refugee Olympic Team? 

最高の気分でした。シリアで紛争が勃発したとき、私は泳ぎ続けていました。私は生活が普通に続いているかのように振る舞おうとしていましたが、紛争はひどくなり、私はもはやプールを使うことができなくなりました。２年間トレーニングができず、オリンピックで泳ぐという夢は破られていました。

ドイツに来て１年後、私は世界中の何百万人もの難民の代表としてオリンピックに出場する機会を得ました。難民選手団の一員になれたことは、とても光栄なことでした。それは、私たちが難民として提唱しようとしていること、つまり、私たちは重荷ではなく、社会に貢献できるスキルと才能を持った人々であるということを証明してくれました。

It was the greatest feeling. When the war first broke out in Syria I kept on swimming, I was trying to pretend life was continuing as normal, but the war got worse and I could no longer use the pool. For two years I could not train which dashed my dreams of ever being able to swim in the Olympics. 

After a year of being in Germany, I got given the chance to represent millions of refugees all over the world. To be part of the refugee team was such a great honour – it demonstrated what we as refugees try to advocate – we are not a burden, we are people with skills and talents who can contribute to society.

★  難民選手団では、ご自身とは異なる言葉や文化を持つ方々と交流する機会がたくさんあるかと思います。お互いを理解する上で、大切だと思われるのはどんなことですか？

     You must have many opportunities to interact with people from diverse cultures who speak different languages than yours in the Refugee Olympic Team. What do you think the most important thing to understand each other when interacting with people from different backgrounds is? 

とても恵まれたことに、私はUNHCRとの活動を通して、様々な言語を話し様々な文化を持つ、多様なバックグラウンドの人々と出会うことができました。また、シリアからドイツに移ってきたときには、全く新しい文化に馴染むことを受け入れなければなりませんでした。確かに難民選手団に参加している全員が異なる国の出身であることは、私たちのチームをまたとないものにしています。しかし、私たちは皆、同じような目標と夢を持ち、異なる信念や文化を尊重しています。そして一番大切なことには、私たちは皆同じ目標に向かって団結しています。

Through my work with UNHCR, I have been lucky enough to meet people from so many different backgrounds, who speak different languages and come from different cultures. I also had to come to terms with settling into a whole new culture when I moved to Germany from Syria. Although we all come from different countries on the Refugee Olympic Team which makes our team unique, we all have similar goals and dreams, we are respectful of our different beliefs and cultures, and we are all united in the same goal and that is the most important thing.

いかがでしたか？

私は、「安全になった途端に全てを失ったことに気がつく」というユスラさんの言葉にハッとさせられました。「難民」と一括りに考えてしまうことは、その人が持っている人格や才能までをも否定してしまうのではないか、そう考えさせられます。
そんな状況の中、同じ目標に向かって団結した難民選手団の一員として、難民についての認識を変えようと取り組まれているユスラさんの姿にとても勇気づけられました。

後編では、UNHCR親善大使としての活動についてや、現在のCOVID-19影響下でのご生活、ユスラさんの今後のビジョンなどをお聞きします。最後に若者へのメッセージもいただきました。お楽しみに！

[2. What we felt through the talks]
What we felt from the talks with Ms. Muzoon Almellehan is her strong, settled beliefs that education can change the lives of children. Her words and strong looks expressed her love and hope towards education. She told us strongly that education is the base of everything, and that we can give out hope to children with the opportunity of education.

Since we have no experience of being in a refugee camp, we can only imagine how Ms. Muzoon had felt in her days there, but from her strong passion in education flowing from her words, we were able to see how education had supported her in the harshest environment, and how many children were saved from her brave actions.

She concluded with a message to all the youths in Japan. “The more you like, the more you should take action” She says that she was able to continue because she had loved to learn. She gave us courage, saying that we can change the world, little by little, by taking action in what we love.

Comments from the members of Voice of Youth JAPAN

I realized on how much I should be thankful for the environment to be able to study as much as I want. Furthermore, being the same youth as Muzoon, she felt very close to talk to. I felt that I should brave enough to start thinking what I can do and start taking it into action.

First, it was my honor to have a chance to talk to the Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF, Ms. Muzoon Almellehan. I thought that she was very cool, to clearly have what she believes in, despite being as old as I am. I was heartbroken by her words, especially when she said that she will never forget about Syria wherever she is, since there are many Syrian people behind me and that she wants to contribute to Syria again in the future. It was also my honor that she had favorably taken Voice of Youth JAPAN when I introduced it to her. I know this may be impertinent of myself, but I will be happy to do something together with her, and I will continue to be in support of her beliefs.

Having a talk with Muzoon, who is in the same generation as myself, I was able to hear the real stories about how serious the reality is in Syria, and how much she came over the hardships when she was telling the importance of education. I had been following the Syrian Crisis for a long time, but it was my first time feeling close with this conflict. I believe that education and urban environment, which is my current major, is closely related as urban environments can be improved with proper education. I would like to continue being in part of Voice of Youth JAPAN and other projects, with the passion I received from her words.

[3. Conclusion]
During the talks, we were able to hear her stories as a university student, about how she likes to study with her friends and go to libraries, despite being a goodwill ambassador. In the end, she was very kind to give us some encouragements for Voice of Youth JAPAN. We hope that we can continue the relationship with her, and someday, we can see each other to cooperate in each other’s actions.

【2. マズーンさんとの対談を通して】
マズーンさんとの対談を通じて、何よりも感じたのは、教育こそが子どもの人生を変えることのできるという揺るぎない信念でした。マズーンさんの力強い目や発せられる言葉の一つ一つから、教育への愛情と希望を感じました。「教育はすべての基盤になる。教育の機会があれば、子供たちに将来の希望を与えることができる。」マズーンさんは力強く語っていました。

故郷での内戦と難民キャンプでの生活を経験したマズーンさんの心情は想像することしかできません。しかし、彼女の言葉から溢れる教育への情熱から、辛い時に教育がどれだけ彼女の心の支えになってきたのか、そして彼女の活動によりどれほど多くの子供たちが救われてきたのかということを感じとることができました。

マズーンさんは日本の若者へのメッセージとして「好きなものほど行動を起こそう！」と述べていました。マズーンさんは学ぶことが好きであったからこそ、これまでの活動を続けることができたと言います。私たち若者が、何か自分の好きなことでアクションを起こすことで、少しずつ世界を変えていくことができるのではないかと、私たちに勇気を与えてくださいました。

一緒に対談に参加した学生たちから、それぞれの感想を述べてもらいました。

● 今まで自分が好きなだけ勉強できるという環境にいられたことの、ありがたさを改めて感じました。そして、同年代ということもあり、マズーンさんがとても身近に感じ、私も現状に甘んじずに、自分が今できることは何か考え行動にうつしていく勇気を持たないと、と思いました。
● まずは今回、ユニセフ親善大使のマズーンさんとお話する機会を与えていただけたことを大変嬉しく思います。マズーンさんは同年代であるのに芯がしっかり通っていらっしゃってカッコいいと思いました。特に、私はどこにいてもシリアのことは忘れないし、私の後ろにはたくさんのシリアの人がいる。将来はシリアに何かできたら、という言葉に大変心を打たれました。VoYJをご紹介した際には、すごく好意的に受け止めてくださったことも大変光栄でした。おこがましいですが、いつかマズーンさんと一緒に何かできたら幸せと思いますし、これからもマズーンさんを応援したいと思っています。
● 今回同年代でもあるマズーンさんと直接お話しして、どれだけシリアの現状が深刻であるか、そして教育の重要性を伝えるに当たってどれだけのチャレンジを乗り越えてきたのかの生の声を聞くことができました。シリアでの問題は永らく自分も興味があり追ってきたものでありましたが、初めて、シリア問題が身近に感じました。教育と自分の専攻である都市環境は関係性が深く、正しい教育によって将来の都市の環境も良い方向へ変えていけるかと思っています。マズーンさんの言葉から受けた刺激を活かして、VoYJやEMPOWERも含めて、これからもっと積極的に頑張って行きたいと思います。

【3. おわりに】
親善大使として世界で活躍するマズーンさん。しかし同時に、私たちと同じ大学生でもあります。大学では友達と一緒に勉強することが好きであることや、図書館によく行くことなど同年代ならではの話も聞くことができました。

非常に気さくで明るい方であり、最後にはVoYJの活動を頑張ってほしいとのお言葉もいただきました。今回の対談で終わることなく、いつか再びお会いし、共に活動できることを願っています。
